《聖母讚歌》是巴哈以《聖經》之《路加福音》第一章46-55節拉丁文為詞而譜寫的，這段《聖經》記載著耶穌的母親瑪麗亞在生耶穌以前，聽見天使向她說她將被聖靈感孕，生一子可以給他起名叫"耶穌"後，就唱起了這首歌。

《尊主頌》（拉丁語：Magnificat），又稱《馬利亞頌》，是基督教禮拜中常唱的頌歌。
這是八首最古老基督教頌歌之一。《尊主頌》得名於第一句，或拉丁語的第一個詞。
《尊主頌》直接取自《路加福音》第1章第46節至第55節參，
記載童貞女馬利亞探訪懷孕的親戚以利沙伯的一段。
經文中講到，當馬利亞向以利沙伯問安時，以利沙伯懷著的施洗約翰便跳動。
以利沙伯稱許馬利亞的信心，馬利亞便以這篇被稱為《尊主頌》的頌歌回應。
基督教中，《尊主頌》通常在時辰禮儀誦唱。
西方基督教中，《尊主頌》通常在羅馬天主教、信義宗和聖公宗的晚禱誦唱，
而在東方基督教中，《尊主頌》在通常在主日的晨禱誦唱。
新教也會在崇拜中唱《尊主頌》。
巴哈的《聖母讚歌》是巴哈的後期作品，在巴哈所創作的少數以拉丁文為詞的樂曲中，這首《聖母讚歌》和《B小調彌撒》一樣偉大，直到今日仍被視為古典音樂中的經典作品。《聖母讚歌》則是巴哈1723年在萊比錫為耶誕節前後所舉行的晚禱會所寫，
在晚禱會時，演唱完《聖母讚歌》後，牧師再進行講道。
巴哈的作品在死後所遭受到的待遇不全然相同：包括莫札特、貝多芬、布拉姆斯等人都熟悉他的鍵盤作品；但是他的聲樂作品比較少受到重視。
聲樂作品中，以拉丁文譜寫、具有聖經典故的一些作品，較有機會演出，
因此《聖母讚歌》沒有被遺忘。
這是巴哈唯一一首在十九世紀被人出版的作品，由此可見此曲之受到歡迎。
聖母讚美是天主教的儀式，但在路德教派的晚禱中還是被保留下來，
此曲原調是降E大調，但後來巴哈將之移調到更光輝的D大調，
這是巴哈聖樂作品中配器最華麗的一闕作品。
